The history and design of UGG boots

Ugg boots are made from sheepskins with fleece attached. The fleece is tanned into the natural leather and the boot will be assembled with the wool on the inside. Ugg boots often have a synthetic sole, commonly made from Ethylene-vinyl acetate (or Avoi) and the stitching is often prominent on the outside of the actual boot. The natural insulative properties of sheepskin provides thermostatic properties to the boot styles: the thick fleecy materials on the inner the main boots wick dampness and allow air to circulate, keeping the feet from body temperature. This house allows Ugg boots to maintain feet warm in cold weather and cool in hot weather. The original design was a pull-on boot inside natural (undyed) tan sheepskin, about 10 ins (25 cm) tall, with rounded, practically shapeless uppers; this is now referred to as the 'classic' design. Produced by a number of manufacturers, these come in a variety of colours, such as black, pink, glowing blue, chestnut, and fuchsia. These come in both pull-on and lace-up varieties and their height can vary from just above the ankle to above the knee.

Some variants of ugg style boots have also been created from kangaroo fur and leather. There are also synthetic boots. Although derided because 'fake' by some on the market, their lower price built them into appealing to large store chains such as Myer.

Last year American podiatrist Erectile dysfunction Chairman raised concern the regular wearing associated with ugg boots could be deleterious to foot wellness due to the lack of mid-foot support.

The origins of the ugg shoe style are disputed, with both Australia and New Zealand declaring to have been the cause of the footwear. Diploma boots were known in rural Australia throughout the 1920s. While it is not clear when manufacturing started out, by 1933 sheepskin boot styles were being made by Blue Mountains Ugg Boots, and Mortels Ugg Factory was creating the boots from the late 1950s.

The Seventies saw the emergence of advertising using the names, but Brian Smith has stated that the boots were called 'uggs' long before the word was trademarked. Frank Mortel associated with Mortels Sheepskin Factory promises he named them 'ugg boots' in 1958, when Mortels started out production, after their wife commented that the first pair he earned were 'ugly.'

Surfing assisted popularise the boots outside Australia and New Zealand, any time Brian Smith started out selling the boots in america through the company Uggs Holdings, Inc. in 1979. Ugg Holdings was marketed to Deckers Outdoor Business in 1995.
